Frequently Asked Questions

Whisky Smarts  ·  For support email support@ensoventures.org

1. How do I get started?

Create an account using Google, Apple, or email, then start logging whiskies you have tried using the + button. Once you have logged at least 5 whiskies with ratings, your palate profile and insight cards will generate automatically.

2. How do I log a whisky?

Tap the + button from any screen. Enter the expression name, distillery, country, style, region (for Scotch and US whiskies), age, ABV, peat level, cask type, maturation type, volume (in ml), price, and your personal rating (0–5 in 0.25 steps). Nose, palate, and finish notes are optional but improve your analytics. A live price-per-70cl preview updates as you enter price and volume.

3. Why is volume always in ml?

The app normalises all value calculations to price per 70cl equivalent — the standard reference bottle size globally. Recording volume in ml (whether a 50ml miniature or a 1-litre bottle) gives the engine a consistent baseline to compare value across different bottle sizes.

4. What is maturation type?

Maturation type tells the analytics engine how to interpret your cask entries. Single Cask — one cask, full confidence on cask attribution. Sequential (Finish) — a primary maturation cask plus a finishing cask (the standard for finished whiskies). Marriage — two casks matured in parallel and vatted at bottling (engine distributes weight equally). Solera — the cask is perpetually partially refilled; the engine routes the signal to distillery character rather than cask type.

5. What is the palate profile?

Your palate profile is generated from regression analysis of your logged whiskies. It identifies which variables — region, style, cask type, peat level, age — best explain your ratings, and ranks them by explanatory power. Peat level is always evaluated first as a gate before other variables.

6. What are the insight cards?

Cards generated automatically from your data covering: Region affinity, Style patterns, Cask type preference, Peat level, Age correlation, Value analysis, What you don't like, and Explore next. Each shows a data-driven strapline — tap any card to see the full ranked breakdown.

7. Why do some whiskies show "below standard"?

Whiskies rated below 4.0★ are tracked separately. They are excluded from value rankings and recommendations, but still contribute to your palate analysis — patterns in what you don't rate are as informative as patterns in what you do.

8. What is the Explore section?

Explore is a reference encyclopedia of whisky terms across six dimensions: Style, Region, Production, Cask, Peat, and Concept. Each entry explains why the term matters to your palate data, what it means technically, and how it shows up in the glass. Where relevant, your personal data is overlaid on each entry.

9. What does "Malt PPM" mean?

PPM (parts per million) measures phenol content in the malted barley at the point of kilning — not in the final bottle. After distillation and maturation, actual phenol levels in the glass are significantly lower. The app uses the categorical Peat Level field (Unpeated / Lightly / Moderately / Heavily Peated) as the primary analytics signal; Malt PPM is an optional secondary data point for enthusiasts who want to record the specification.

10. How do I manage my subscription?

Whisky Smarts offers a free trial followed by an auto-renewing subscription. On iOS, manage or cancel via App Store → Your Account → Subscriptions. On Android, go to Google Play → Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.

11. How do I export my data?

Export my data — available from Settings → Data Management. A structured JSON export of all your personal data under GDPR Article 20 (right to portability), including your profile, all whisky entries, and account information. Shared via your device's native share sheet.

12. How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings → Account → Delete Account. You will be asked to re-authenticate before deletion. This permanently and irreversibly removes your account, all whisky log entries, all analytics data, and all personal information.

13. Is my whisky data private?

Yes. Your whisky data is stored securely in Firebase (EU region) and is never sold or shared with third parties for any marketing or advertising purpose. Analytics can be disabled entirely from Settings. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
